First Aid and Professional Responder Programs

Canadian Red Cross First Aid and Professional Responder Programs:

Basic (Emergency) First Aid – 1 day
This is a one-day course that equips you with the essential skills to save lives in an emergency, whether at home or work.

Intermediate (Standard) First Aid – 2 days
This course is a comprehensive two-day training program designed for individuals who need first aid skills for work or personal reasons.

Advanced First Aid – 80 hours
Building on the knowledge and skills within the Emergency Care for Professional Responders text, learners will gain the knowledge and skills needed to provide appropriate patient assessments, interventions, and ongoing care in the workplace. The various options for transportation of an injured worker from the workplace to a healthcare facility are also covered. This course meets CSA Standard Z1210-17 First Aid Training for the Workplace.

Remote First Aid – 20 hours
This course is for those who live or work in a non-urban or remote workplace or community, or who are outdoor recreation enthusiasts (2–3 hours from organized health care). Participants will gain the skills and training required for planning, preventing injury, and promoting individual safety in a remote setting.  Includes strategies for providing extended care in a remote setting for up to 24 hours. Part of the course is taught in an outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity and endurance than typical first aid training.

Wilderness First Aid – 40 hours
This course is for those who live or work in a non-urban or remote workplace or community, or who are outdoor recreation enthusiasts (more than 3 hours from organized health care). Participants will gain the skills and training required for planning, preventing injury, and promoting individual safety in a wilderness setting.  Includes strategies for providing extended care in a remote setting more than 24 hours. Part of the course is taught in an outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity and endurance than typical first aid training. This training prepares individuals in leadership roles for complex and demanding situations often encountered in remote wilderness settings.

Wilderness First Responder – 80 hours
Participants will gain the advanced first aid and CPR skills required to work and respond to emergencies in remote or wilderness settings, and to provide urgent evacuation and, at times, extended care for five or more days until organized health care can be accessed. Participants will develop advanced leadership and rescue decision-making skills, as well as extrication, and use of professional tools and resources. A significant part of the course is taught in an outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity and endurance than typical first aid training.

Marine Basic First Aid – 16 hours
Comprehensive two-day (16 hour) course designed to meet the needs of those expected to provide first aid in a marine environment. Course uses a combination of lecture, discussion, and scenarios taken from the marine/fishing industry to teach the required knowledge and skills.  Course meets the requirements of Transport Canada outlined in Transport Publication (TP) 13008 E.

Marine Advanced First Aid – 31 hours
Designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to apply immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness on board a vessel. Participants will gain knowledge of marine first aid equipment, and the transferring of patients from a ship. All aspects of course are focused in a marine setting. Course meets the requirements of Transport Canada outlined in Transport Publication (TP) 13008E.

First Responder Training – 40 hours
Comprehensive first aid and CPR skills for professional first responders or those training to become first responders. This course teaches the patient assessment model, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, hemorrhage control, and care for a variety of acute and chronic conditions.

Emergency Medical Responder – 80-120 hours
Participants will learn and demonstrate all knowledge and skills needed to provide appropriate patient assessments, interventions, and on-going care, including the transportation of a patient to a healthcare facility. Course content follows the National Occupational Competency Profiles (NOCP) as defined by the Paramedic Association of Canada. This is for professionals in emergency medical care who may be responsible for initial assessments, the provision of safe and prudent care, and the transport of a patient to the most appropriate healthcare facility.

CPR A with AED – adult 4 hours

CPR C with AED – adult, child and infant – 5 hours

CPR BLS with AED – 4 hours; with Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy – 6 hours

All certifications have a 3 year expiry date.
